Our third workshop was on Circular development and food systems, and we talked about the role of municipal governments in helping to strengthen circularity initiatives such as composting, solid waste management, tackling food waste, and ways of influencing the production and consumption chain, among others.
To share her experience and bring an Inspiration Pill we invited Andriele Martins, Secretary of the Environment of Santiago-RS, to tell us about the Pila Verde project – organic waste that earns credit to buy at agroecological markets – an initiative of the City of Santiago, in Rio Grande do Sul, that connects several links in the municipality’s food chain.
The Call to debate addressed the question How can municipal governments include circularity in their food systems? and was given by Elizabeth Moura, Regional Coordinator for Circular Development at ICLEI América do Sul. Elizabeth holds a degree in Tourism from Centro Universitário Ibero-Americano, a Master’s in Government and Public Administration from the Complutense University of Madrid, and is a PhD candidate in the Political Science, Administration and International Relations program at the same institution. Throughout her career she has worked on projects in solid waste management, food security, human rights, culture, urban mobility, smart cities and urban planning.
