Our sixth workshop was about food and nutrition education, a theme closely tied to the areas of health and education, but also to all areas and programs that work on and promote healthy and sustainable eating, focusing not only on the present moment but on the future of food for all citizens

We continued our methodological journey and the development of the mapping of municipal food systems and their levers of transformation, by drawing up a roadmap for municipal food systems planning, proposing the review and advancement of the design of the project or initiative with the greatest impact on transforming each city’s food system. We also invited cities to set an achievable goal within the first edition of LUPPA, which ends in September 2022.

Our thematic journey – in which we encourage the exchange of experiences among LUPPA cities – focused on food and nutrition education. We discussed the role of municipal government in shaping healthier and more inclusive food environments, in supporting the development of healthy and sustainable eating habits in schools and social assistance facilities, in the educational use of gardens, and in the relationship with local food cultures.

Our objectives for this workshop were:

  1. Strengthen relationships among participants in the LUPPA journey and their capacity for collaboration
  2. Introduce a tool to support drawing up a roadmap for planning fair, healthy, and sustainable municipal food systems and for setting an achievable goal in the first edition of LUPPA
  3. Introduce the workshop’s proposed theme: food and nutrition education
  4. Learn about food and nutrition education experiences and promote exchanges among participating cities

The Call to Debate was given by Kelly Alves, who has worked for 3 years as a consultant on food and nutrition public policy at the organization ACT Promoção da Saúde, focusing on advocacy, social mobilization, and network building. In her academic research, she studies the trajectories of food and nutrition policies, programs, and actions, seeking to understand the contexts of their progress and challenges. She has professional experience in Primary Care/Family Health Strategy, training professionals for the Unified Health System (SUS), and managing the National Food and Nutrition Policy (PNAN), with a focus on planning and institutional relations for organizing nutritional care in SUS and coordination between SUS and SISAN (National Food and Nutrition Security System).
