Our fourth workshop was about Climate resilience and local food production, and we reflected on the role of municipal government in mitigating the vulnerability that food producers face in the territory due to increasingly frequent climate adversities. We also considered how influencing consumption and generating demand for local, more resilient foods can likewise be a food security strategy.

The objectives of this workshop were:

  1. Strengthen relationships among participants in the LUPPA journey and their capacity for collaboration
  2. Identify the areas of greatest impact for transforming each city’s food system
  3. Introduce the workshop’s proposed theme: Climate resilience and the vulnerability of local food production to climate impacts
  4. Learn about experiences with climate resilience and municipal food systems and promote exchanges among participating cities

To bring us an Inspiration Pill, we invited Márcio Macedo Costa, who holds a PhD in Energy Planning from COPPE at UFRJ. Márcio has been on the staff of BNDES for 20 years and currently works in the Bank’s Environment Department, focusing on financing operations for forest restoration.

And the Call to Debate was given by Maitê Maronhas, who holds a master’s degree in environmental sciences, is a specialist in gender, development, and public policy, and is an Agricultural and Environmental engineer. For the past 10 years, Maitê has worked as an Advisor to ASA (Articulação Semiárido Brasileiro) for the P1+2 (One Land and Two Waters Program) and for the Sementes do Semiárido (Semi-Arid Seeds) program. She is currently a project coordinator at Cáritas Nordeste 2.
