On June 28 we held a seminar on the experience of Catrapovos, to show in practice how municipalities can align their public procurement with local culture and production.

Joining the conversation were Federal Prosecutor Fernando Merloto Soave; Sineide Neres, nutritionist at FNDE and advisor to the general coordination of PNAE (National School Feeding Program); Dr Klelson, city councilor of Barreirinha in Amazonas; and Bia Castro, nutritionist at the Department of Education of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, also in Amazonas.

The Mesa Permanente de Diálogo Catrapovos Brasil (Catrapovos Brazil Permanent Dialogue Forum) was established by the Chamber for Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF, 6CCR) in 2021 to promote the adoption of traditional food in Indigenous and quilombola schools and in schools of riverside, extractivist and caiçara communities, among others, throughout the country. In addition, the group – made up of representatives of public bodies and civil society – discusses the obstacles, challenges and ways of enabling public procurement of the production of Indigenous and traditional communities. The work seeks to ensure compliance with the law requiring that at least 30% of food products be purchased from family farming, as well as the right of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities to school meals suited to their own production processes and their culture.

Catrapovos Brasil works to replicate throughout the country the good practice developed by the Comissão de Alimentos Tradicionais dos Povos no Amazonas (Catrapoa – Commission for Traditional Foods of the Peoples of Amazonas).
