How can cities place agroecology at the core of urban garden planning? How can urban agriculture be planned so that agroecology is its founding principle?

To reflect on the political and technical arrangements needed to integrate different sectors of municipal administration and put agroecology at the center of the urban agriculture planning table, the operational challenges commonly encountered, the needs of public administration, and how to build an interdisciplinary policy anchored in social participation and in the recognition that diverse forms of knowledge coexist in implementing sustainable food production, the City of Recife is offering the seminar Agroecology in the City: How to Plan?, open to all LUPPA participants.

The seminar was led by Alexandre Ramos, an architect and urban planner who serves as manager of Recife’s Executive Secretariat for Urban Agriculture, and Silvana Lemos, a home economist and rural extension worker. Silvana collaborates with the Espaço Agroecológico da Várzea and is an employee of IPA.

This is also an opportunity to identify shared challenges and potential with the city of Recife, for the future selection of the cities that will receive mentoring from Recife.

The seminar is especially relevant for officials working in planning, agriculture, the environment, job and income generation, human rights, and food security.
