Sharing experiences, exchanging information and being in contact with different realities is essential to strengthen the municipal public policy agenda and to engage more and more cities in implementing circular food systems that address food waste mitigation to achieve environmental and economic benefits. And that is precisely the objective of the European Union – Brazil Dialogues Project: “Cities and Food: Governance and Good Practices to leverage Circular Urban Food Systems”, an initiative developed by the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil in partnership with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa, and with support from Instituto Comida do Amanhã, ICLEI South America and WWF-Brazil. Today, we are very happy to announce the 5 LUPPA cities selected to take part in this project. They are:
- Curitiba
- Maricá
- Recife
- Rio Branco
- Santarém
The selection was made taking into account the greatest possible territorial diversity, and all of these cities will be the subject of the case study on sustainable urban food systems to be carried out under the project; they will also take part in exchange activities with European cities. An analysis of the gravimetric composition of waste at street markets in three of the five selected cities will complement the generation of data to support food policies. Advancing the topic of circular food systems in Brazilian cities is an alternative for expanding the supply of healthy food to citizens, generating positive impacts on food and nutrition security and reducing the environmental impacts of food production and consumption processes.
