LUPPA – Laboratório Urbano de Políticas Públicas Alimentares (Urban Food Policy Lab) believes in the potential of cities as agents of positive transformation of food systems. To support local governments in developing and strengthening healthy and resilient food systems, the initiative launched a call for applications for the first edition of LUPPA, in which Brazilian cities with populations of up to 1.5 million inhabitants will take part in the LUPPA community over the course of one year. In total, 23 cities located in 13 Brazilian states were selected, reinforcing the importance of territorial diversity.

City-to-city mentoring
In addition to cities with up to 1.5 million inhabitants committed to advancing the development of food systems public policies during the current administration, cities with consolidated policies on this topic were also selected. Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Recife will act as “mentor cities”, sharing experiences, tools and references that will help the others on their sustainable development journey.
Partnerships
LUPPA’s technical and institutional partners will be Associação Mercy For Animals Brasil – Programa Alimentação Consciente Brasil, Humane Society International and the Group for Studies, Research and Practices on Food Environment and Health of the Federal University of Minas Gerais – GEPPAAS/UFMG. With this strong group, LUPPA – Laboratório Urbano de Políticas Públicas Alimentares seeks to increase the number of Brazilian cities that develop strategic and integrated food policies, as well as to expand general knowledge about local food systems policies. To this end, the program will bring together representatives of Brazilian city governments to debate and discuss the challenges cities face; share local experiences and challenges; and learn about the topics and processes involved in building food systems that are sustainable and fair for people and the planet.
